Chapter 2-17 The Heir of Slytherin
- Harry enters the Chamber of Secrets and
finds Ginny, barely alive. He is
awaited in the Chamber by Tom Riddle, not as a ghost but
as a memory, preserved in his Diary. The diary is lying on the floor
near a giant statue. Riddle has Harry's wand. He tells Harry Ginny has
been writing in his diary for months and Riddle enchanted her to open
the Chamber of Secrets and 'set the Serpent of Slytherin on four Mudbloods'. She finally became suspicous and
tried to get rid of the diary, which Harry later found.
- Riddle tells the real story of fifty years ago, how he framed Hagrid
and how Professor Dumbledore, then Transfiguration teacher, suspected
him. For months his new target has been Harry. He uses Harry's wand
and writes the words "TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE" in the air, then waving his
wand the letters rearrange themselves to "I AM LORD VOLDERMORT". Riddle
is the Heir of Slytherin, he is
Voldemort. Riddle claims to be the greatest
sorcerer in the world, Harry contradicts him saying that Dumbledore
is. Along with music, Fawkes the Phoenix flies in, bringing Harry the Sorting Hat.
- Riddle summons the Basilisk and it enters
through the statue of Salazar Slytherin. Fawkes tries to
protect Harry, attacking the Serpent and blinding it. The snake's whipping
tail sweeps the Sorting Hat into Harry's arms, he puts it on. A sword falls out of it. As
the Basilisk lunges at him, Harry drives the sword to the hilt into
the roof of the serpent's mouth, one poisonous fang sinking into his
arm in the act.
- Fawkes cries tears onto Harry's wound. Riddle realises it and as he
is about to finish Harry of with his wand, Harry takes the basilisk
fang and plunges it into the diary, thereby killing Riddle.
- Ginny wakes up. They return to Ron and Lockhart. Lockhart's Memory Charm turns out to have backfired
and has wiped out his memory. Fawkes takes them all back up to the castle
and up to Professor McGonagall's office.
